MAY BIRTHDAYS
22 Emma MacGregor
Acts 2:1-21 According to Jewish tradition, the Israelites arrived at Mt. Sinai fifty days after leaving Egypt, so the Festival of Weeks (Pentecost) came to commemorate the giving of the Law. The Day of Pentecost is where we find about 120 disciples. It is here God would pour out the Holy Spirit (ruah), the same Spirit who was the agent at creation promises to bring about a new creation. There are two schools of thought concerning this strange happening; when the Galilean disciples spoke all those assembled understood, even though a great mix of languages was represented. As the newly filled and fired up disciples spoke on this day, Pentecost reversed the confusion of tongues experienced at the Tower of Babel. Just as humanity was divided by the proliferation of tongues at Babel, so at Pentecost the gift of languages/tongues was a sign of unity in Christ. While some scholars use this as a proof-text for “glossolalia,” the “gift of tongues,” others call it “a miracle of languages,” a one-time event on the same order as the Virgin Birth. Whatever your belief, the outcome is the same: The Word is preached to all who have ears, no matter what language is spoken. Pentecost Sunday is considered the birthday of the Church. The Spirit keeps the Body of Christ alive. The Church did not come to be by its own power, but by the Spirit of God who gave it the breath of life. Ruah did not simply come to be on the Day of Pentecost, but played a role in creation and through the ages, John the Baptist prophesied the “Baptism of the Holy Spirit and fire" and Jesus told the fearful followers to wait for God’s Spirit in order to receive power. We’ve got the power, too! As we celebrate another birthday, may we be bold, standing on the Word and speaking the Word to any who are open. Come to Spiritual Connections to learn more and bring a friend.
